DIFFERENTIATING AND CARING FOR OILY AND DRY SCALP

Considered the “soil” that nurtures the hair, the scalp also requires meticulous care. To maintain healthy hair, we need to pay attention not only to the strands and hair quality but also to the scalp condition.

DRY SCALP

  • Visible signs of a dry scalp include tightness and frequent appearance of dandruff, as well as flaky skin due to weather changes or chemical hair treatments. Moreover, dry scalp often feels itchy and uncomfortable, affecting aesthetics and causing excessive dandruff.
  • The cause lies in the loss of natural moisture from the scalp or changes in weather, along with improper hair care practices, contributing to scalp dryness.

How to care for dry scalp:

  • Drink plenty of water to hydrate the body and scalp.
  • Use sulfate-free shampoo with high moisturizing properties.
  • Avoid scratching the scalp vigorously while shampooing to prevent flakiness.
  • Use hair conditioner, coconut oil, and hair masks to improve the moisture balance of both the scalp and hair.

OILY SCALP

Oily and greasy scalp is often more prevalent in hot weather. During hot weather, hormonal changes stimulate the sebaceous glands on the scalp, resulting in excess oil production and a greasy feeling. Hair on an oily scalp tends to appear dull, lacks aesthetic appeal, and feels uncomfortable and itchy due to scalp oiliness.

Causes of oily scalp may include genetics, overactive sebaceous glands, hormonal imbalances, or external factors such as dirt and humid weather, contributing to excessive scalp oil production.

How to care for oily scalp:

  • Shampoo correctly and regularly, at least every other day.
  • Shampoo with lukewarm water and rinse with cold water.
  • Limit touching the hair and use a wide-tooth comb to avoid further oil production on the scalp.
  • Use vitamin B-enriched shampoos to balance the oil and water content for the hair
